To celebrate Black History Month, the Laurel Education Center recently hosted an educational and entertaining program. The students began preparing for the program through classroom assignments.

“Black history shouldn’t be celebrated during just one month, but should be celebrated continuously. It’s important for our students to know how the past shapes their present and how it’s their job to continue the legacy of leadership and courage,” said LEC Director David Lewis.

To learn about men and women of courage, Students researched local, state and national black leaders whose contributions to black history were profound. Students then created posters representing their chosen person and their successes. Those were displayed at the school as part of the Black History Month program.

During the program students sang, recited poems and presented skits. The program also included a special performance by the Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church Choir and the recognition of special guests.

“We thank School Board Member Rev. Earnest Thompson and Laurel City Councilman Manual Jones for attending and supporting our students,” Lewis said.

Following the program, students, staff and guests were invited to a reception.

“The students and staff worked extremely hard and I am really proud of their efforts. Ms. [Peggy] Jackson, assistant teacher at the LEC, did an outstanding job organizing the program,” Lewis said. “I was pleasantly surprised with the overwhelming audience turnout. I really appreciate our parents’ support for their children. Parental support is a critical factor in the success of our students.”
