Laurel Middle School students in Melody Hicks’ sixth, seventh and eighth grade gifted classes completed a study of bridges. Students learned about basic bridge types, basic engineering, and the physics behind different truss designs. Students formed bridge companies and chose jobs such as architects, project directors, accountants, and builders. They then had to build their architects bridge design from flat toothpicks and glue. The winning company was the bridge that could withstand the most weight. “LMS Builders, Inc.” a combination of 6th and 7th graders won the competition by designing a bridge that held 30 lbs. before its collapse.
